Finding the Perfect Laptop Backpack For Myself
I recently embarked on what felt like a never-ending quest to find the perfect backpack for my MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2023). The journey started with me exploring different options, leading me through some twists and turns before landing on the Rivacase 8825 Black Mélange—a decision I’m thrilled about.
The First Choice: Elecom OFF TOCO OF01
Initially, I had my sights set on the Elecom OFF TOCO OF01. It seemed like a solid, versatile option, and I confidently placed the order. However, once I received the bag, I realized it was bulkier than I had imagined. I needed something slim, compact, and easier to carry—especially since I usually only need to bring my laptop, its charger, a mini umbrella (a must item to carry in Singapore) and a small medicine pouch.
This realization triggered a deeper reflection: do I really need a laptop bag with multiple pockets when 99% of the time I’m just commuting to the office with those three essentials? The additional pockets were primarily useful for rare occasions when I travel outside Singapore. On my daily commute, I travel in packed MRT trains, so my bag shouldn’t take up too much space when I’m wearing it or setting it down on the floor. Another priority was that the bag should be able to stand upright in a cramped MRT compartment without tipping over.
As I observed fellow commuters, I noticed quite a few carrying large, nearly empty bags that swayed awkwardly. Others had overloaded bags, probably filled with items they rarely, if ever, used. This didn’t make sense to me, further convincing me that a slimmer, more practical bag would better suit my everyday needs and would appear more professional. With all these thoughts in mind, I decided to return the OFF TOCO OF01 and continue my search.
The Store Visit and Discovery
Then, while casually browsing at a local store (Popular), I stumbled upon a sleek, compact backpack with a logo resembling a tortoise symbol. It immediately caught my eye. I didn’t take note of the brand at first, but I soon discovered it was the Rivacase 8825. After testing it out with my laptop, charger, medicine pouch, and mini umbrella, I was sold. This bag had everything I needed — small, lightweight, and professional-looking, yet it was a backpack, which I preferred.
Why I Chose Rivacase 8825
What ultimately made me choose the Rivacase 8825 was its minimalist design and perfect size. Though my MacBook Pro 14-inch barely fits (as 8825 was designed for carrying a 13.3 inches laptop and hasn't been upgraded since), it still provides ample protection with its padded corners which are most damage prone. The black mélange fabric offers a modern, understated look ideal for the office. Its slim profile ensures I don’t feel like I’m lugging around an oversized bag, a common sight on public transit. At 109 SGD, the price also felt very reasonable after being able to try it out in person.
Final Thoughts
Sometimes, it’s not just about buying online but about the tactile experience of testing things in-store with your actual stuff you intend to carry in your bag. I’m really happy with how the Rivacase 8825 turned out to be the perfect fit for my style and needs. If you’re looking for something compact, lightweight, and stylish for your essentials, I’d highly recommend checking it out.
